What to Expect During Hypnotherapy
Free Initial Consultation: getting to know each other.
Before I undertake any course of hypnotherapy with a new client I always spend some time assessing their needs over the phone or face-to-face at one of my three practices:
The Centre of the Hills, situated at the foot of the stunning Malvern Hills in Worcestershire.
The Regency Practice, in Cheltenham, the most complete Regency town in Britain, noted for its elegance and achievements in fine arts and architecture, and located on the edge of the Cotswolds.
Bedford Consulting Rooms, a beautifully renovated Victorian building in the centre of Bedford.
During this initial assessment, we will talk clearly and openly about why you are seeking support and what you would like to achieve. I will also answer any questions or concerns that you might have.
I don’t charge for this initial assessment (if carried out over the phone), viewing it as a great way for us to start to get to know each other, overcome any nerves you might be experiencing, and help us get off to the best possible start.
We will then make an appointment for your first session.
The First Session: Setting Realistic End Goals
Firstly, congratulations! Attending the first session means that you have taken an important step on the road to a better and happier life. Now we will discuss your presenting issue in more depth and I will take a detailed clinical history of the circumstances behind your particular problem. This, in turn, will help us to formulate your treatment strategy.
What’s crucial here is for us to decide what you want to achieve; what your end goal is. This will help us to agree the nature and degree of support you need and depending on how you subsequently respond to therapy we will be able to assess the likely duration of your treatment.
As a guide, many goals can be reached within five sessions and smoking cessation usually takes only a single session. More complex issues though may take more sessions and some clients like to return even after their goals have been achieved because they simply enjoy the relaxing experience of hypnosis.
I will then explain the process of hypnosis and how it is used in hypnotherapy to make positive, lasting changes to your thought patterns, feelings and behaviours.
Then we get to work with hypnosis! Often, in the first session, I will teach self-hypnosis so that you can continue our work outside of the consulting room.
Subsequent Sessions: Refining the Process
The next session (if you need it) and all subsequent sessions typically begin with a brief review of how you’ve been getting on following the last session. This enables us to ensure that we’re still on track to reach the goal you set in the first session and, if necessary, fine tune our approach.
We will then continue to work together until your goal is fully realised and you have full control over the aspect of your life that has been holding you back.
